HBO’s Real Time host Bill Maher decried “cancel culture” on Friday’s show, telling his guests in which “we need a pushback” on the movement.
Maher held a panel discussion with Bari Weiss, a former brand new York Times Opinion editor, in addition to Thomas Chatterton Williams, a columnist for Harper’s Magazine. The pair discussed the open letter they, along with various other progressive personalities — including author J.K. Rowling in addition to feminist Gloria Steinem — signed, which warns in which the “free exchange of information in addition to ideas, the lifeblood of a liberal society, is actually daily becoming more constricted.”
“As a guy who did a show called Politically Incorrect in addition to another called Real Time, thank you, because we need a pushback on cancel culture,” Maher said.
“What strikes me about the item is actually the pushback is actually coming via liberals in addition to almost everyone who signs This specific letter … is actually a liberal!” Maher exclaimed. “Bari, the fact in which you — they call you a centrist or right-winger! I mean, if a hip, millennial, Jewish bisexual girl living in San Francisco is actually not a liberal … who is actually these days?”
Weiss, who resigned via the Times last month after accusing the paper of intolerance, explained how cancel culture differs via criticism.
“Criticism is actually great. What cancel culture is actually about is actually not criticism. the item is actually about punishment. the item is actually about generating a person radioactive. the item is actually about taking away their job,” Weiss said.
“the item’s not just about punishing the sinner, the item’s not just about punishing the person for being insufficiently pure. the item’s about This specific sort of secondary boycott of people who might deign to speak to in which person or appear on a platform with in which person. in addition to we see just very obviously where in which kind of politics gets us. If conversation with people in which we disagree with becomes impossible, what is actually the way in which we solve conflict?… the item’s violence,” she added.
Weiss also praised Trader Joe’s, which recently announced in which the item might not follow the steps of various other brands in addition to companies in which have changed their names or images within the name of social justice.
“You’re right. in which’s what we need more of,” Maher said. “Being able to speak freely is actually the lifeblood not only of democracy, of definitely just our way of life.”
Maher has long used his platform to denounce cancel culture, referring to the item as a “cancer on progressivism” in March following Chris Matthews’ departure via MSNBC.
“MSNBC used to run This specific thing, ‘This specific is actually who we are.’ Well, I didn’t like who you were This specific week, in addition to I don’t think a lot of people who work there liked This specific either, in addition to I think This specific cancel culture is actually a cancer on progressivism,” Maher said at the time. “Liberals always have to fight a two-front war. Republicans only have to fight the Democrats. Democrats have to fight the Republicans in addition to each various other.”
