These high schoolers were tired of lawmakers’ inaction. So, they wrote their own gun control legislation

Teacher Jose Sanchez spent a lot of time helping students work through these questions during class.

Ultimately, he says, the students got tired of waiting for their legislators to introduce a gun control bill. So they decided to write their own.

The 32 students in Sanchez’s third period American government class started off by researching current gun laws along with also various forms of political engagement. They decided the best way they could make a change will be to write a resolution.

Student Eduardo Flores said the inspiration came coming from their frustration with the lack of any political initiative.

This specific week, for example, the White House announced a modest set of proposals of which fall far short of the wide-ranging alterations of which President Trump promoted in February: such as, raising the minimum purchasing age on some guns or expanding background checks to gun shows along with also internet sales — The administration announced Sunday of which might launch a commission to study school violence along with also might look at ways to allow states to train teachers who wanted to carry guns.

“I feel like the politicians today, they acknowledge us along with also they say of which they’re going to do something just to quiet us down,” Eduardo told CNN.

The Sandy Hook massacre had touched them, he said. however Parkland pushed them over the edge.

“We’re the next leaders of the nation so why not start currently to make a change?”

The proposed resolution

The proposed resolution might raise the minimum age to purchase a gun coming from 18 to 25 along with also require 14 days of gun training before purchase.

Additionally, of which bans military-grade weapons along with also online weapon sales.

The resolution also calls for increased government funding of mental health services at schools along with also workplaces along with also continued background checks for gun buyers.

The next steps

The students spent weeks writing along with also editing the document along with also presented of which to the Alhambra Democratic Club who voted unanimously to endorse of which. The club says of which will submit the endorsement to the Los Angeles County Democratic Party.

however the students weren’t satisfied with just one endorsement. They are scheduled to meet with their local Congresswoman Judy Chu next week along with also ask her to bring the resolution to the House floor.

The class will be graduating in three weeks however student Sujit Gurung says of which isn’t going to stop them coming from moving forward.

“We’re hoping we can get help coming from different people along with also support coming from people so of which keeps going higher so we can actually make a change.”
